Acne usually appears during puberty, and gradually disappears towards adulthood, but in some cases might persist throughout adulthood. It is a cause of embarrasment in most young people, and in top of that, the skin usually looks greasy in appearance. In severe cases, scarring and uneven skin texture may result. Acne is caused by the blockage of oil glands and hair follicles, with the involvement of bacteria that promote inflammation and pus formation. Acne can be controlled by regularly washing the face with a gentle cleanser that can remove oil and dirt. Over-the-counter acne treatments are also available to help prevent and treat acne breakouts. Other ways to prevent acne formation are:
• Stop touching your face
• Have a healthy diet and maintain proper hydration
• Avoid certain foods such as sweets and dairy
• Limit exposure to the sun
• Reduce stress
Eczema, or dermatitis, is a common condition that is described as a type of skin inflammation characterised by intense redness or itchiness of the skin or scalp. These areas may appear to have raised, blistered or bleeding appearance. Due to its intense itchiness, it may interfere with daily activities such as sleep. There are different types of eczema, and an important part in its management is to identify the possible factors that may have triggered the eczema flare.
The following factors that are listed are examples of the most common causes of eczema. Identifying the most probable cause and implementing changes to the daily routine in order to avoid the said factor if possible is the key to minimise or prevent future eczema exacerbations.
Another important thing in the management of eczema is maintaining proper skin hydration. Constant hydration using emollient or moisturising creams restores the integrity of the skin, preventing the entry of irritants that usually trigger the inflammation reaction. It is recommended to use moisturisers that are hypoallergenic, or those that don’t have any extra ingredients such as fragrances or additives. Apply the moisturiser at least twice a day, especially after a warm, short shower.
