A course of antibiotics can cause a significant imbalance in the gut microbiota, reducing the diversity and abundance of microorganisms. A common side effect of treatment with antibiotics is antibiotic-associated diarrhoea (AAD). A recent systematic review and meta-analysis found that probiotics have demonstrated efficacy for reducing the risk of AAD (0.49, 95% CI 0.36-0.66).
Antibiotic Protocol: If taking antibiotics, take probiotics 2–3 hours before or after the medication to prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Continue probiotics for at least one week after the course finishes.
