Discovered in 1957, Co-Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a naturally occurring compound in our bodies, resembling the antioxidant vitamin E in its action and potentially more powerful. Coenzyme Q10 is present in every cell of the body, predominantly in the mitochondria of each cell. As heart and liver cells have relatively more mitochondria, these organs therefore contain more CoQ10 than other tissues. Research has shown that CoQ10 plays a major role in supporting heart health, enhancing energy levels, supporting the immune system, healthy gums, providing antioxidant activity and may mitigate some of the side effects associated with certain prescription drugs such as statins.

CoQ10 is found in meat, fish and nuts. The amount of CoQ10 found in these dietary sources, however, isn’t enough to significantly increase CoQ10 levels in your body.

CoQ10 might make blood-thinning drugs, such as warfarin (Jantoven), less effective. This could increase the risk of a blood clot.
