Henderson-Proud Since 1955

Our bricks-and-mortar pharmacy, Henderson Discount Pharmacy in Auckland, has been in the same Henderson location since the 1950’s as Devcich Pharmacy and we’ve been serving customers since 2009 under Timea's leadership.

Changing Times

The name Discount Pharmacy came about because, in 2009, we decided to discount prescription fees to our customers and as the first in our industry to do so, we certainly ruffled some feathers.

Timea

Owner / Pharmacist

My name is Timea Venter and I am passionate about pharmacy, positive psychology and a healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition.

As a little girl I used to ask my mum to let me walk into every pharmacy we passed by just to feel the smell and the warmth of the staff always helping someone in need.

I also used to climb up to the medical cabinet and read the instructions to be able to give helpful advice to my parents’ friends when they would talk about their health problems.

I was at pharmacy school when I watched my dad having a stroke after a stressful work related conversation over the phone and unfortunately he never recovered. He went into a coma and died 3 days later. He was only 52 years old.

He never took his health seriously, although he was very intelligent he thought he could “outsmart” his high blood pressure and live a life full of stress and bad lifestyle choices without consequences.

Only when he was in the hospital did we realised how sick he really was.

That was a shock and an inspiration for me to help others lead a healthy lifestyle so no family should go through the suffering we went through when he left us.

My journey towards a more integrated approach to health was inspired by my own experiences later in life.

As soon as I turned 40 I started showing signs of insulin resistance. Knowing that my dad had diabetes I could not ignore the signs and forced me to look at my nutrition choices, especially my sugar addiction.

As soon as I quit having sugar (which was not easy) all my symptoms disappeared and other things have improved also: I slept better, lost weight, my skin cleared out among other things.

This broadened my view about the power of nutrition and the major role it plays in our health.

But, nutrition is not the only aspect to a healthy lifestyle. So is exercise, sleep, attitude change, meaningful connections and living with a sense of purpose.

When the opportunity came to have my own pharmacy in 2009, I didn’t hesitate. I knew that I wanted to have my own way of doing things and giving customers a great experience was my mission.

Shien

Pharmacist

To me being a pharmacist is a privileged position, and I have always had a long-held ambition to become one. I fully understand that although it is a demanding and challenging role, it is also a very rewarding one especially when I am able to help my customers achieve high quality health care and a better understanding of their medications. I enjoy assisting customers with their medication queries and providing recommendations where appropriate, counselling them and at the same time getting to know them more personally.

Jocelyn

Pharmacist

Jocelyn is our Mandarin and Cantonese speaking full-time pharmacist, who is responsible for our long term conditions patients, Clozapine patients and handles all general medicines enquiries.

“Pharmacy has always been a passion of mine and in the years that I have worked as a pharmacist I’ve come to really love the patient interactions that are involved. I enjoy helping people solve problems and seeing them walk out the door with a smile on their face really makes my day. I have a particular interest in  cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and I enjoy counselling patients who are recently diagnosed with these conditions or starting new medications as I know how much of an impact that one conversation can have.”

Bob

Pharmacist

Bob is originally from Korea and his sense of humour and friendliness have quickly made him a customer favourite.

“I am passionate about everything to do with pharmacy and health, and  enjoy engaging with the people in our community. I love my job and the daily duties of a pharmacist, such as verifying the accuracy of prescriptions, reviewing possible side effects, assigning the correct dosage, recommending the most suitable non-prescription drugs, and instructing patients how to take their medications.”

I had no doubt that being a pharmacist and helping people was my calling
