Unprotected sex carries the risk of getting sexually transmitted infections (STIs). There are a variety of infections that can be passed sexually. These include Chlamydia, bacterial vaginosis and the dreaded HIV infection. It is thus important to use preventive measures to stop such transmission. One such measure, and a very effective protection as well, is the use of condoms. Condoms are not only excellent in preventing pregnancy, they are also excellent in preventing the transmission of STIs by acting as a barrier in between during intercourse.

The vagina normally does a great job of secreting natural lubricants during intercourse, and this lubrication makes the experience more enjoyable. More importantly though, this lubrication also protect the vaginal lining from abrasion. However, if the natural lubrication in inadequte, pain and discomfort may be felt during sex. To amend this, lubricants are used to ease the discomfort, as well as protect the vagina from damage.
